Two centuries ago the Spanish Island of Menorca was part of the British crown. The arrival of the British was the start of the “Gin Craze” at the beginning of the 18th Century. The English frequented the local taverns but were unable to find the liquor that was fashionable in their country. Gin was in. Artisans from the port town of Mahón found the solution to meet the high demand using a base of wine alcohol from Mediterranean vineyards and imported juniper berries. So gin was-in in Menorca. It became the popular drink throughout the 18th and 19th centuries as a drink integral to very special events. Miguel Pons Justo, the heir of a family with a long tradition of craftsmanship, began to bottle gin and make it widely available. He chose the century-old family business name and image of the “Xoriguer” windmill, built in 1784 on the family estate, to represent his brand. Xoriguer remains a family business offering handcrafted, distinctive and traditional liquors. Mahón-Menorca is recognized throughout the European Union. The palate begins with juniper, followed by smooth citrus, finishing off roundly with a subtle saline touch. Wonderfully moreish and complex on the mid-palate. Long and lingering with an appealing freshness. Rich undertones of spice, pine, black pepper and citrus zest. Makes a perfect G&T!
